— How we cook

MADE FOR PREGNANCY
AND RECOVERY.

In Japan, a new mother traditionally rests for the first 21 days after birth while her family takes over the kitchen: okayu, miso soup, simmered vegetables and fish. We cook that same warm, simple food, with pregnancy food safety built in.

  • Cooked through

No raw fish or sashimi, and eggs are cooked until firm. Our soft-boiled egg stays on the catering menu.

  • Low-mercury fish

We cook wild salmon and clams, from the FDA's best choices for pregnancy and breastfeeding, and skip high-mercury fish like swordfish, king mackerel and bigeye tuna.

  • No alcohol

No sake, mirin or sake lees, even cooked. Our amazake is the alcohol-free kind, made with koji.

  • No hijiki or liver

Hijiki seaweed is high in arsenic, and liver is very high in vitamin A. Both are best skipped in pregnancy, so neither is on this menu.

  • Easy on salt

Miso and umeboshi are salty, so we season gently and put the salty toppings on the side.

  • Made to reheat

Everything arrives chilled, labeled with the day we cooked it, how long it keeps and how to heat it. Heat it until it's steaming.

We're cooks, not doctors. If your doctor, midwife or dietitian has asked you to eat or avoid something, for gestational diabetes or anything else, tell us and we'll plan around it.

— Before you start

COMMON QUESTIONS.

What is okayu?
Japanese rice porridge: rice simmered slowly in plenty of water until it's soft and creamy. In Japan it's what families make for anyone who needs something warm and gentle, new mothers included.
Why Japanese food for pregnancy and after birth?
Japanese home cooking is rice, miso soup, fish and vegetables, simmered and steamed more than fried. It's warm, balanced and easy to eat with one hand. In Japan, new mothers traditionally rest for the first 21 days after birth while family takes over the cooking. That's the part we do.
Is it safe to eat while pregnant?
We cook this menu with pregnancy in mind: everything cooked through, low-mercury fish only, and no alcohol, hijiki or liver. We're cooks, not doctors, so check with your doctor or midwife about your own needs, and tell us what they've asked you to eat or avoid.
Can I send it as a gift?
Yes. Choose "It's a gift" on the form and tell us who it's for. We'll set up the start date and delivery with them, and ask about allergies so the first delivery is right.
When should I book a postpartum plan?
During pregnancy, ideally a month or more before your due date. We'll pencil in a start date and move it when baby arrives.
Is there enough for my partner?
Each plan feeds one. Choose meals for two on the form and we'll add a second portion of everything to your quote.
What about allergies and other diets?
Tell us on the form. Miso and soy sauce contain soy and wheat, dashi contains fish, and our kitchen handles all major allergens. We can cook gluten-free with tamari, and vegan with kombu and shiitake dashi.
Where do you deliver?
Anywhere in Marin County, from Sausalito to Novato and out to West Marin.
How does booking and payment work?
Send the form and we'll reply within one business day with your menu and a quote. Then we email a Square invoice, and your start date is held once it's paid. With 48 hours' notice you can move, skip or cancel a delivery, and a start date moves whenever the baby does.
